On 20 January 2017 Jane Munro and I organised a Macclesfield event to participate in ‘Bridges Not Walls’, a campaign showing resistance to Trump’s border wall and his divisive confrontational politics. We painted a huge banner and then fastened it to the railings of the footbridge above the Hibel Road in Macclesfield, aided by many friends and like-minded folk. It was a glorious sunny day. We got lots of toots and waves from those driving underneath and later a fair amount of online abuse including a fantastic reference to us all as ‘jobshy fucksticks’ which has remained a personal favourite. The rape jokes weren’t funny, but most of the contributions were supportive and the day felt really positive at a very depressing time.
